Lili Locks

If you've been reading this blog for awhile, you know that Lili hates every single one of her toys and only wants to wreak havoc throughout the house utilizing household appliances. Whether it's dumpster diving in our garbage can, sliding under the gates at the top of the stairs to go exploring in the basement or starting the dishwasher over and over and over again, it's always SOMETHING she really shouldn't be doing...which, of course, makes her do it even more. Little by little we have stumbled on various contraptions to keep her away from and out of things. We have a long way to go, but for anyone else experiencing these issues with their overly curious toddler, I thought I would post some of the recent safety locks we purchased and installed. So far, Lili has NOT...I repeat, has NOT...figured out how to open them. Let's hope it stays that way.

First we have this lovely dishwasher lock. The biggest issue with this is that although she can't OPEN the dishwasher, she can still start it. We installed the lock over the lever that locks the door, so as long as the lever is in the unlocked position, she can't start the dishwasher either. Of course we're not with it enough to always ensure it is "unlocked" before latching the safety lock, but that's another issue.




Here we have the lock for our pantry. This is the Mother-Lock of all child safety locks. I can barely get the damn thing open, much less a toddler. If you think you've gotten a little chunky this winter and want to lose a few pounds, these locks also encourage weight loss. They are such a pain in the arse to open, I will sometimes give up those evening munchies, just so I don't have to deal with it.

Here is the same lock we installed for our dishwasher...on our garbage can. This is the one that pisses Lili off the most. I think she misses the "treasures" she pulls out of there and drags into the living room to share with us.

I'm predicting our next 2 battles will be much more challenging...the stairs and the kitchen table. Aside from using our chairs as firewood (to remove Lili's access to the table altogether) and putting a shock collar on the munchkin, our options are extremely limited.
